About Us

Cutting-Edge Technology

Your comprehensive eye exam in Kelowna, BC, will treat you to a superior level of eye care! We equip our office with the latest technology, so you benefit from precise results and an efficient appointment. When necessary, our optometrist may use various high-tech diagnostic devices to assess your eye health accurately. Here are some examples:

Optical Coherence Tomography (OCT) Scans and Digital Retinal Imaging
Every eye exam includes an OCT scan & Fundus camera digital imaging to ensure every patient receives the most advanced examination of their eye. OCT captures fluid in the layers of the eye that fundus can’t catch.

OCT scans and retinal images are stored electronically. Your eye doctor therefore has a baseline and permanent record of your retinal condition. This makes it efficient to monitor any changes in your eyes from eye exam to exam, which is critical for monitoring conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and macular degeneration. These procedures are done quickly and painlessly, and they are completely safe. No patient prep is required.

Comprehensive Eye Exam

Why Eye Exams are Essential

A precise, detailed inspection of your visual system is the only dependable way to diagnose the early stages of many ocular diseases, such as macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma and cataracts. These dangerous conditions typically remain symptomless until they progress to a later, more threatening stage. Once this happens, it is much harder to treat the diseases to prevent complications and future vision loss. Therefore, even if your vision prescription is current and you have no complaints, it’s critical to schedule routine comprehensive eye exams in Kelowna, BC.

What Happens During an Eye Exam?

Depending upon your personal health, age and vision condition, your customized eye exam may include:

  • Preliminary evaluation of your ocular health and vision: our eye doctor will use a slit lamp to view your lens, cornea and inner eye tissues.
  • Refraction exam: we will check your visual acuity and diagnose your detailed vision prescription for eyeglasses and contact lenses
  • Dilated eye exam: to check your ocular health thoroughly. We will administer dilating eye drops and then high-powered magnification in order to inspect your optic nerve, retinal tissues and vitreous fluid.
  • Tonometry: this quick and painless procedure measures the pressure of your inner eye fluid, which can indicate glaucoma.

How Often to have a Comprehensive Eye Exam

An annual eye exam is recommended for every patient.

Medical insurance across Canada offers a lot of assistance for many of us in Kelowna, BC. Eye exams, for example, children and seniors receive a partially covered annual eye exam. Even for adults between the ages of 19-64 can schedule a comprehensive eye exam and receive coverage and benefits every 2 years.

While not every medical insurance offers the same benefits, Optometry on Bernard’s team of eye care professionals can help review your medical insurance with you to determine your eligibility for coverage. For any eye-related medical conditions or eye emergency, you will receive some medical coverage from your insurance. Symptoms like burning, redness, eye pain, floaters and haloes or flashes can be treated by one of our eye doctors, and your medical insurance will help cover the costs.

Contact Lenses

We offer a wide selection of contact lenses including disposable soft contact, multifocal, toric, and colored lenses. Whether you wear daily, weekly or monthly disposables, or conventional (vial) lenses, check out our selection of lenses that fit your needs.

A good contact lens fit starts with a thorough eye exam to ensure the most up-to-date prescription and rule out any pre-existing conditions that could interfere with contact lens wear.

We will determine the best fitting lens based on your lifestyle needs, the shape and health of your eye. In most cases, you’ll have the opportunity to try lenses on the same day as your exam. You can even go home with a few samples before making a final decision.

We follow up the initial fitting and then make any necessary changes in fit or materials to get you the best possible fit. We teach all our patients proper contact lens care and also possible consequences if proper care is not taken. Then we continue with long-term follow-up to monitor the condition of the lenses and to ensure that proper hygiene is being maintained.
